After a successful festival run last year that garnered two awards and a third nomination, I couldn’t be happier to share Becoming a Queen publicly. U.S. distribution is being facilitated by Gravitas Ventures.
I chose June 14th as it is the last Tuesday before Juneteenth celebrations. Seeing as Juneteenth and Carnival both share a very similar history of celebrating freedom and specifically, the emancipation of enslaved Africans, it only made sense to launch the film today for U.S. audiences. Through Joella’s story and wider conversations of the roots of Carnival in the film, viewers will be able to draw connections to the shared past.
Becoming a Queen will be available in Canada on July 19th 2022 in the buildup to Toronto Caribbean Carnival and internationally at a date to be determined.
Wherever you watch it, may you enjoy this visually vibrant 90-minute labour of love three and a half years in the making!
