In early July, recording artist Francois Klark reached out to me to discuss visuals for his new single “Sailing”. Klark wanted to capture a desolate environment in a gray and rainy atmosphere. The idea was presented to me as something of a cinematic travel log, with a yellow raincoat being centred to contrast with the frames dominated by the greens of plant life, and the blues and greys of the surrounding water.
This shoot was a fun and intense one, as it seemed like we were thrown all four seasons of Canadian weather in a day of shooting all exteriors at Humber Bay park. A simple garbage bag shielded the camera from the torrential ran and hail. But hey! It all worked out as we got the mood we were looking for. So this was one of those times when the production lucked out WITH rain.
As stated in Klark’s press release, “After enthralling Netflix audiences worldwide with his moving acoustic ballad ‘Always’ in the film ‘Feel The Beat’, Francois Klark returns with a hauntingly beautiful and evocative indie pop ode, ‘Sailing’. Slinking between the fantastical veneer of James Blake soundscapes and spacey Coldplay piano, Klark’s otherworldly vocal, sharply dressed onto storytelling lyrics, tells of an all-consuming desire and hopeful pursuit to return to, and make whole again a neglected relationship.”
