PATTY vs. PATTY
PATTY vs. PATTY is a short documentary that revisits Toronto’s absurd “Patty Wars” of February 1985, when Canadian federal food inspectors suddenly deemed the beef patties from Jamaica to be illegally named “patty”. This legal discrepancy came about because under the Federal Meat Inspection Act at the time, a “patty” or “beef patty” in Canada was officially only defined as the meat that commonly goes in the middle of a hamburger and only that. Jamaican patty vendor Michael Davidson, recounts how he took on the Canadian government in the face of hefty fines, in defending Jamaican culture by way of its most popular snack.
